When you meet Gwen Stefani in person, it’s almost inconceivable that she’s a mother of two. First and foremost, because she’s smokin’ hot and youthful — no, not like she’s trying to hang onto her 20s, but playfully styled in clothing that’s both age-appropriate but unmistakably Gwen. And the other reason why it’s tough to imagine her as a mom: she’s busy all the time. This weekend, she was the guest of honor at a party to celebrate the release of her latest artistic fruits, the Harajuku Mini for Target kids line.
We spoke with Gwen for a few minutes to find out more about the collab, as well as get her take on the creative process. Check out the photos: she’s in L.A.M.B. from head to toe — and that amazing necklace is coming out in Spring 2012.
What were some of your big inspirations for the kids’ collection?
This collection is mainly inspired by Japanese kids’ clothing, but it’s also a little bit of the things I love from around the world…I’ve been so lucky, as a musician, to travel all over and experience so many different cultures and fashions…like when I finally got to Japan, I felt like I was home. I love Japanese fashion…and so there’s a lot of it in this collection.
Was this collection much different than designing L.A.M.B. or Harajuku Lovers?
Harajuku Mini is a dream come true. Target has given me the creative freedom to design kid’s clothing that is different than most anything you see out here with great quality, attention to detail and most of all, available at amazing prices.
When you were a little kid, did you have one “go to” outfit that you wore forever and ever?
It wasn’t one outfit, but I remember going to the fabric store with my mom and taking clothes apart and sewing things back together. I loved sewing, which I got from my mother, which she got from her mother. My mom made my prom dresses. Then as I got older, instead of the fabric store, it was the thrift store…my room was always strewn with clothes I got from [thrifting trips]. So no, there wasn’t just one outfit.
Since you’re so deeply rooted in Southern California, are you influenced by any other Southern California designers?
I’m not really influenced by Southern California designers, but I am influenced by Southern California. When you look at the collection, it’s very…these pants [holding up the punky plaid pants] are so Orange County, but they’re English, too! And this little jacket [pointing to the one with the animal hood] it’s pure Disneyland.
