Ever since Gwen Stefani launched her set of five “Harajuku Lovers” fragrances earlier this summer, the faces of her and her four back-up dancers have been everywhere from magazines to special booths on the first floor of Macy’s. Well, come the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, they’ll be out in full-force, with the dancers gyrating to Gwen’s music atop their very own “Tokyo Lights” float.

The float itself was created by the Macy’s team and approved by Gwen, her people, and Coty. Hand-painted by the Macy’s float crew, it’s topped off with platforms for the dancers themselves—Baby, Love, Music, and Lil Angel. Should you chance the cold of Thanksgiving morning to see the parade yourself, watch out for this float as there will be street teams dressed in the HL theme handing out samples and cards for gifts with purchase or a chance at a grand prize.

It takes a great event to impress beauty editors who have seen — and sampled — it all. At the April media launch of Coty Prestige’s new “Harajuku Lovers” fragrance collection, created by pop superstar Gwen Stefani, Los Angeles-based TBA Global made just such a splash. Through a mix of design, entertainment and pure creativity, the TBA team took 70 New York beauty editors to Japan’s Harajuku District, inspiration for Stefani’s fragrance line. “It would have been easy to just rely on a megastar to make a product stand out,” says Alison Smith Jenks, TBA’s vice president of marketing. “But we wanted to push the envelope and submerse the editors in the energy of the Harajuku District culture.”
WELCOME TO JAPAN

The funky, hip quality of the Harajuku District is reflected in Stefani’s fragrance bottles, which are molded in the shape of the “Harajuku Girls,” the singer’s backup dancers. “Stefani is a creative genius, and her work is visually stunning,” Jenks says. “Our job was to take the creative concepts she designed with Coty and bring them to life.”

The event team started with the venue — a chic downtown loft space — which TBA chose for its size, aesthetics and proximity to magazine offices and hotels. “We didn’t want the editors to travel too far,” Jenks points out. To turn the space into a fantastical “Harajuku world,” the event team designed five unique lounge areas, representative of the collections’ five different scents and bottles. Larger-than-life bottle figurines adorned the space, while paper lanterns dangled from the ceiling. Sleek Lucite chairs displayed decals inspired by the Harajuku line: a mix of Japanese characters, hearts and other symbols. Bathroom doors featured Japanese anime characters in place of the usual male and female symbols, while projections of Stefani’s song lyrics scrolled atop coffee tables.
Waiters passed selections from a Japanese-influenced menu on bamboo trays. The editors munched on mini tuna burgers with wasabi mayonnaise, sake-marinated fried chicken, jicama and lotus root dumplings, and wasabi peas. Coconut sorbet, green tea ice cream and hibiscus tea with lavender honey provided a sweet finale.
STAR TURN

On a stage designed to resemble a Japanese teahouse, a multi-panel video projector displayed images of Stefani and her Harajuki Girls morphing into anime figures while her hits played. As a nod to Japanese theater, each anime figure was then revealed as a live dancer in silhouette behind rice paper scrims. “Showing just their silhouettes provided a really cool feel and added to the mystery and anticipation of Stefani’s appearance on stage,” Jenks says.

The stage’s center screen opened to reveal Stefani herself, who then sat with a Coty executive for an informal, talk show-style Q&A session. This personal format “allowed her personality to shine through,” Jenks says. TBA also scheduled one-on-one interview sessions with Stefani for the editors. “It was the ideal situation for a media launch,” Jenks says.

Added a bunch of ads for HL fragrance:

I need to take better pictures of mine & upload them. I did take a picture of the gift ball, with my cell phone, so quality isn’t the best. I was at Nordstrom in Chicago and if you bought all 5 small bottles you get the HL ball free.

You could also buy 2 large bottles and get a HL Bag for free. my friend Kelby sent me a picture of the bag:

She also said they would be getting bracelets at Dillards

An assortment of PR types, press, schoolgirls and passersby gathered an hour ago outside Bloomingdales 59th Street to watch Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku girls dance in the windows of the store to promote new purses from Gwen’s line Harajuku Lovers. Three out of the four girls (Love, Angel, Music and Baby) showed up; since we don’t know which is which, you’ll have to look at the photos to see who was missing. The event almost went off without a hitch, but one PR girl had trouble yanking the curtain suction-cupped to the window down, requiring assistance. After that, it was all gravy. The girls, decked out in knee socks and super-short gray dresses that caused more than a few wardrobe malfunctions, danced and posed with the colorful handbags to the tune of Stefani hits like Rich Girl and What You Waiting For? (The latter was the soundtrack to a hilarious moment when an octogenarian slowly wandered between the windows and the press pit.)

The crowd got into it, moving to the beat and singing along. One woman took it a bit far, aggressively gyrating around and grabbing peoples’ arms, yelling “Come on, let’s show them how New Yorkers get down.” Instead, we just left. If you missed today’s show, the girls will be back at 59th Street, and will make an appearance at the Soho store, this Friday.

When it was announced in June of 2008 that Gwen Stefani was coming out with Harajuku Lovers Fragrances, they were expected to be released in September of 2008. To everyones surprise, they are available a month early! Each in adorable bottles to represent one of the Harajuku Girls, the fragrances are available online now through Sephora. In the September, 2008 issue Gwen Stefani Talks Harajuku Lovers Fragrances with Nylon. Interviewed by Fiorella Valdesolo for a piece titled Turning Japanese, Gwen Stefani dishes on the Harajuku Lovers fragrances, how their creation came about, and her future in beauty products and cosmetics.

Gwen Stefani might be the only person who could dye her hair powder blue, get braces, slap a bindi on her forehead, throw on a pair of parachute pants, and have a line of girls behind her ready to do the exact same thing. Since her early days as the front-woman of No Doubt, Stefani has consistently played by her own style rules, much to the delight of her fans. It’s no surprise then that her jump from style icon to fashion and beauty entrepreneur has been an easy one - Stefani’s L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers fashion lines, and her first fragrance have all been widely embraced. So it was with eager anticipation that I, an avowed No Doubt superfan, awaited her next foray into fragrance. And Harajuku Lovers - not one, not two, but five distinctive perfumes inspired by the girls of Tokyo’s most fashionable district and housed in Kidrobot-like figurines - does not disappoint. Here, Stefani answers a few questions about her latest creations.

Harajuku Lovers Frangrances - Love Q : When Did you first visit Harajuku, and what struck you most about it?
A : I was first in Harajuku when I was touring with No Doubt - it was like going to another planet for me. But it felt like going home in a weird way because I remember being in the shopping district and thinking, “Wow, everybody here is so creative.” It was very inspiring and that inspiration stuck with me all the way through making the dance records. I always got really excited about going back.

Harajuku Lovers Frangrances - Lil Angel Q : How did you come up with the idea to connect Harajuku to a fragrance?
A : I just had this image in my mind of how cool it would be to have each Harajuku girl have her own fragrance, with each fragrance bottle being in the shape of the girl; basically a doll that holds fragrance. I asked Coty if we could do five Harajuku Lovers fragrances, not really expecting them to say yes, but when they did, the whole thing came together really quickly because I had already been thinking about the project for the last four or five years.

Harajuku Lovers Frangrances - Music Q : Tell me about the characters and how they came to be.
A : They’re each based on L.A.M.B. Love is love. She’s really just this easygoing, lovable girl, soft and romantic. Angel is from L.A., the city of angels. She is also easygoing, but more of a cheerleader type. She’s got a lot of spirit and energy. Music is the tomboy, the aggressive, confident girl. Also, she is obsessed with and hugely inspired by Michael Jackson. She can be a little tough and she definitely has attitute. Baby is the youngest. She is the funniest one to me - the most conservative, but the biggest flirt out of all of them. She’s very girly and sweet. And, luckily I dot to be a part of it too as G!

Harajuku Lovers Frangrances - Baby Q : Did creating these characters with specific personalities and styles help to influence each of their scents?
A : Each one was created from a smell that I love and that matches each girl’s personality. I had inspiration points. Love is a soft, romantic floral with some rose and jasmine. Angel is yummy with lots of of my favorite fruity notes. Music has some real attitute with a mix of my favorite scents including pear, sweet pea, and musk. And obviously I wanted Baby to have a powdery, baby smell. With G, I used coconut and other tropical scents because I love to wear those types of scents. We’re all individuals, we’re all saying something different. And that’s what the fragrances are supposed to be - five different fragrances so you can choose which one is you.

Harajuku Lovers Frangrances - G Q: What of your fragrances do you wear yourself?
A : I actually really like G, with its tropical smell. And Love is so pretty that I can wear it both day and night - it smells just like my favorite roses. I didn’t want to have all these bottles of perfume that I couldn’t wear, so I had to make sure I loved them all.

Q : Will you add more characters to the Harajuku World?
A : The brand really lends itself to branching off in many different directions, so we’ll see!

Q : Any chance you would ever do a makeup line?
A : Of course! I would love to do a L.A.M.B. makeup line some day. Makeup, like fragrance, can be an important part of creating a mood and a feeling when you’re getting dressed.

You can also request a sample of one of the five Harajuku Lovers Fragrances through Coty.
