Last night I attended my third Prince concert of his 21 Night Stand in Los Angeles residency at The Forum in Inglewood, CA and — as you might expect — I had the time of my life! People have been asking me which of the 3 shows (thus far) has been the best and honestly, they each were “the best”. Because the shows are different every single time, there is something very special and memorable about each show. Last night, I went to the show with Emma and Josh and we had a BLAST! The show as full of amazing guest stars … making it truly one of the most memorable shows I’ve ever attended.
Gwen Stefani, Sheila E. and Nikka Costa were the surprise guests who performed on stage with Prince last night. For some reason, there was no opening act … right at about 9PM, Prince hit the stage and rocked out until 12AM (after 5 encores). The setlist was full of amazing gems … songs that I’ve personally never seen performed live before. Of the shows I’ve seen, last night’s was the first to feature Prince performing solo songs on his piano. His performances of Something in the Water Does Not Compute and Strange Relationship immediately made the show one of the most important concerts I’ve ever attended. Gwen Stefani sings vocals on the song So Far, So Pleased from Prince‘s album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic and, to my knowledge, she has never performed the song with him on stage before last night.
The best collabo of the night, tho, IMHO was Nikka Costa singing the Led Zepplin song Whole Lotta Love with Prince on guitar … it was just … SICK! The whole show was just a lot of fun. During one of the encores, all the VIP table folks got brought up on stage — including Gwen and hubby Gavin Rossdale, Kirstie Alley (who is an old personal friend of Prince‘s) and her Dancing with the Stars partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy and others. It really felt like one big house party.
