”Don’t Speak” has been ranked at #84 on NME Magazine’s list of the 100 Best Tracks of the 90s. We of course think the song should been much higher on the list,but it’s still cool to see it included on such a list.
Legend has it Gwen Stefani discarded the early, slushy version of ‘Don’t Speak’ after her relationship with No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal fell apart. It may have made rehearsals a tad awkward, but her decision to slow down the tempo and give the lyrics extra bite paid dividends. A lenda diz que a Gwen descartou a versão original de ‘Don’t Speak’ depois que seu relacionamento com o baixista do No Doubt, Tony Kanal, terminou. OIs ensaios claramente ficaram esquisitos com ambos na mesma sala, mas sua decisão de deixar o ritmo da música mais lento e colocar letras mais reais realmente valeram a pena. Uma mudança drástica de estilo pra uma banda que tem um estilo ska e que, ironicamente, o single é o maior da carreira da banda até hoje.
