There’s a reason they saved L.A.M.B. for last.
The Gwen Stefani production, which kicked off way late Thursday, but was worth the wait, was more of a theater show than a runway show. The Fashion Week finale featured models grouped by race—black, white, Asian and well, platinum blonde babes that looked like Gwenbots—stomping out single file to a militaristic march. “There were so many looks, that was like six fashion shows,” said celeb stylist Robert Verdi, who sat front row right near a seat reserved for one major A-lister who didn’t show.
So who bailed on Gwen? And how did 4-year-old Kingston steal the spotlight?

There were two seats reserved for Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso, but the True Grit star pulled out last minute when his name began causing chaos. It was not clear if Damon was in the building, but one backstage source said security was told the star was there. And when photographers and other press began causing a near riot around his seat, everyone was told the actor “wouldn’t be doing any interviews.” He never appeared for the press or public.
There was also a near riot outside, after fire marshals were called in to control the unruly crowdwaiting to get in.
“L’Oréal has tons of reserved seats,” said one backstage source. “But the show got to capacity too early and they had to close the doors. People were going crazy out front.”
None of the chaos seemed to phase the No Doubt frontwoman; her show was a massive hit, with looks ranging from flowy black dresses with gold hardware to coats, jumpsuits and leather leggings. With so many looks, it was the longest production of the week.
A video screen played behind the models as they walked the runway, first showing war scenes with gunshots and helicopters, which later morphed into black birds on a red screen and the same prints flashed on screen that Gwen had on the models.
The blaring songs—very Gwen—featured Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” and a mix of hip-hop and rock and had the audience, including Christian Siriano, Taryn Manning and Elle’s Joe Zee, dancing in their seats.
Then the singer’s own face was shown behind a wall of fire, while the opening of her own song “What You Waiting For?” played, and she came out for a final bow. Believe us, it was cool.
The 41-year-old Stefani smiled and waved as she strutted down the runway in a one-shouldered silky animal print dress and an updo. Her boys, Kingston and 2-year-old Zuma, had been watching from the second row. By the end, Zuma, wearing a hat and pointing at the models, had fallen asleep—and missed his big brother’s big moment.
When a bleached blond Kingston spotted Gwen walking past him, he yelled, “Mommy!” and bolted from his second-row perch, down the stairs and onto the runway, trailing behind his mom while she walked. She didn’t notice him there for a few seconds as the audience laughed and cheered, but he caught up with her, touching her arm. She turned around surprised and took his hand.
What a perfect ending to Fashion Week.
