Staff at The Bassett’s Pole pub hosted their biggest ever international superstar visitor on Monday when singing sensation Gwen Stefani popped in for a meal.

Gwen, famous for hits such as What You Waiting For?, Hollaback Girl and Wind It Up, dropped by on her way back from visiting Twycross Zoo with her husband, Bush vocalist Gavin Rossdale and their one-year-old son Kingston.

The 37-year-old Californian, who was staying at New Hall Hotel in Sutton, was in the area to give a concert at the National Indoor Arena the following night.

Sue Wright, assistant manager at the pub-restaurant, said: “She came in at about 7.30pm with Gavin and Kingston and they stayed for around an hour. They had been to Twycross Zoo earlier in the day and apparently had had a lovely time there.

“Gwen ate a prawn cocktail starter followed by lasagne. She was very friendly and didn’t mind when staff asked if they could have their photos taken with her. Some guests took photos too, and one of our guests bought her a drink.”

Sue said her husband, licensee Chris Wright, had a good chat with Stefani, who left “a substantial tip” for waitress Louise Hughes.

“I was too shy to speak to her, though,” Sue admitted.

She said the pub had hosted stars before, including former Move and Wizzard frontman Roy Wood, plus TV presenter and comedian Nick Hancock, but none as big as Stefani, who first hit the top of the charts 11 years ago with the song Don’t Speak, as vocalist with No Doubt.
